hawkeyehunter – glad to have you here! We have a number of club members that live down in your area. I'm personally from NW Iowa but I get down to the Ames area several times a year, including during our Rendezvous (held annually over Memorial Day weekend at the Izzak Walton League in Ames).
Glad to hear that you decided to give traditional archery gear a try – what are you shooting right now for a bow? The choice of arrows varies from one person to the next, and many will shoot both carbons and woods – depending on their mood. I shoot wood arrows most of the time, but carbons can be nice if you think you might be richocheting arrows off trees at a 3D shoot.
The 2nd Annual Midwest Traditional and Primitive Archery Expo is going to be held in Waterloo March 9 – 11 so you should put that on your calendar. There will be more traditional bows there than you can shoot in one weekend!
In the meantime, I'll check with a few of the other guys down near Des Moines. Maybe they'll hop on here to say hello!
